Card Values In Baccarat

September 24th, 2008

Card value is an important aspect of every Baccarat game and can potentially have a great bearing on how well you do.

It is easy enough to determine the value of a particular hand in Baccarat. You can arrive at this simply by adding the values of each of the individual cards in your hand. Keep in mind that the tens and the face cards always have a value of zero, and the number of “pips” on all the other cards determines their values. Also remember that only the last digit of the total values is used in determining the value of a hand in Baccarat. This means that all baccarat hands can only have values that range from 0 to 9. Obviously, the hand that has the higher value will win. In the event that two or more hands have the same value, the Baccarat game will end in a tie.

There are a few other rules that will govern the value of a particular hand. If you get a hand in baccarat that has a value of 8 or 9 for example, it is called a “natural.” Anyone who holds a natural hand in baccarat has to show it to the rest of the table, and the baccarat game is effectively over.

Origins Of Baccarat

Baccarat is a widely popular card game played in many casinos all over the world. Its origins are somewhat shrouded in obscurity. Many historians believe that Baccarat was actually brought into France from Italy during Charles VIII’s reign, which would place the date of its introduction into France somewhere between1483 to 1498. That was the period when Charles was in power.

In many ways, Baccarat is quite similar to two other card games, namely: Faro and Basset. Today, there are three commonly played variations of the game: baccarat chemin de fer or railway, baccarat banque or à deux tableaux, and punto banco. Punto banco is also commonly referred to as North American baccarat.

Unlike the other variations of the game Punto banco relies primarily on chance. There is absolutely with no skill or strategy involved. Instead, the player’s actions are directly related to the cards that he is dealt. In baccarat chemin de fer and baccarat banque on the other hand, players can make choices that directly affect the outcome of the game.

Baccarat is really a fairly simple casino game. There are only three possible outcomes of the game: “Player”, “Banker” and “Tie”. Interestingly enough, these terms do not refer to the customer or to the house.
